In
Gladys’ travels, teaching, lectures, workshop, seminars and conferences she
has been awarded citations, certificates, plaques, honors from countries and
dignitaries and much more. None
have been more meaningful or touching than those bestowed on her by her
community of Caro.
In
1978 Gladys was the Citizen of the Year, an honor she humbly appreciates.
In 1986 she was selected “Distinguished Alumni” of her high school
and found herself as the main speaker for the graduating class, just 50 years
salutatorian speech to her class of 1936. It
was an inspiring speech for those young people to hear as she had just returned
from the Soviet Union. Gladys was a
founding member of the Caro Arts Society and has watched it grow into Thumb Area
Center for the Arts and their work on getting an auditorium in Caro.
Gladys’
beloved Caro Garden Club honored her with a life membership of their club and
the Michigan Federation Garden Clubs. She
is a past president and has served in many capacities over her almost 50 years
of membership. They had put
together a cookbook in 1967. It was
the first book Gladys had illustrated and is now highly sought after as a
collector item. Gladys is also an honorary member of the Wixon Club.
When
Gladys started traveling so much her students founded the Galloway Porcelain Art
Club. They are a very active group
with seminars held in Gladys’ studio with wonderful teachers she has recruited
around the world. She said, “It
has been my privilege to meet and get to know many artists.
When you find a good artist who is also a good teacher – that is whom I
like to bring in for my students!”
